Sunda, our Asian elephant, arrived at the Topeka Zoo on July 16, 1966. She is the one with smaller ears. Asian elephants live in the wet forests of India.

Tembo, the African elephant, has larger ears and arrived on March 16, 1976. African elephants live in the open forests and savannahs of southern Africa.

Did you know that elephant's trunks are long, flexible noses? The trunk has approximately 40,000 muscles and can be used to breathe or use as a hand, but elephants cannot drink through their trunks.
